Grading & Earthwork in Cascade, ID
Rough or finish grading for drainage, driveways, and final site work. We move dirt accurately so water moves where it should — away from your investment.
What Grading & Earthwork Is
Grading is the art and science of moving dirt to exact elevations so water flows where you want it and surfaces sit where they should. At Cascade Excavation, we handle both rough grading (getting the site close to plan) and finish grading (the final tight tolerances that make a driveway drive right, a yard drain right, and a pad sit flat). We grade for drainage, driveways, parking areas, building pads, retaining structures, septic drain fields, and final landscape prep. Every cubic yard we move has a purpose — and that purpose is almost always either supporting a structure or moving water away from one. In Valley County's mountain terrain, where spring runoff and summer thunderstorms can turn a poorly graded lot into a swamp, this work matters more than most people realize.
When You Need It
You need grading whenever water isn't doing what you want it to, whenever a surface isn't sitting where it should, or whenever you're prepping for the next phase of construction. Common triggers: water pooling near your foundation or in your crawlspace, a driveway that turns into a creek every spring, a new build that needs the lot shaped before concrete, a yard that won't drain, a retaining wall failing because the grade behind it pushes water the wrong way, or a finished build that needs final cleanup grading before sod and landscaping. Grading is also what fixes the damage done by another contractor who didn't think about water — we get those calls a lot.
Our Process
We start by understanding the goal. Are we shaping for drainage, for a driveway, for a building pad, for landscape? Where does the water need to go, and where can it go on this property? We review any plans, walk the site, and identify the high and low points. Then we set grade stakes — either from a survey, a plan, or our own laser-measured baseline — so every operator knows exactly what elevation to hit. We cut, fill, and shape with attention to compaction, especially on fill that will eventually carry weight. We pay particular attention to slope away from structures (a 5% slope for the first 10 feet is the rule we hold to where conditions allow). On finish grade, we tighten tolerances, rake out tracks, and leave a smooth surface. Before we leave, we pour water if needed to confirm drainage actually works the way we said it would.
Service Area
We grade lots and properties across Cascade, McCall, Donnelly, Smiths Ferry, Yellow Pine, and the rest of Valley County, Idaho. Mountain grading isn't flatland grading — slopes are steeper, soils are rockier, and the water has more energy when it moves. Our crews are built for it.
