What Trenching Is

Trenching is the controlled excavation of long, narrow cuts to install underground utilities — water lines, sewer lines, septic lines, electrical conduit, gas, fiber, irrigation, and drainage. At Cascade Excavation, we cut trenches to the depth and width your utility requires, install proper bedding, protect the line during installation, and backfill in compacted lifts so the surface above doesn't settle six months later. We coordinate with the utility companies, follow Dig Line locates, and leave a finished surface that matches what was there before — driveway, lawn, gravel, or pasture.

When You Need It

You need trenching anytime you're running a utility from one point to another underground. New construction needs water from the well to the house, electrical from the meter to the panel, sewer or septic line from the building to the system, and often gas, fiber, and irrigation on top of that. Existing properties need trenching for a new well, a generator hookup, an outbuilding's power and water, a buried propane line, a French drain, or to replace an aging waterline before it freezes and bursts. Subdivisions need bulk utility trenching to feed every lot. If something needs to be underground and isn't, you need a trench.

Our Process

We start by calling in Dig Line locates and reviewing them with you on-site so we know where every existing utility is buried before a tooth touches the ground. We confirm the depth your specific utility requires (waterlines need to be below frost — in Valley County that means at least 4 feet, often deeper). We cut the trench with the right machine and attachment for the soil — bucket for dirt, hammer for rock, and we hit plenty of rock around here. We install bedding (typically sand or fine material) under the line so it isn't sitting on a sharp rock that will eventually wear through it. The line goes in, gets inspected if required, and we backfill in lifts, compacting as we go. Same-day backfill whenever possible, because an open trench overnight is a liability nobody needs. We restore the surface to match what was there.

Service Area

We trench across Cascade, McCall, Donnelly, Smiths Ferry, Yellow Pine, and the rest of Valley County, Idaho. Mountain soils mean rock — sometimes a lot of it — and we come prepared with the right machines and attachments for the job.
